How the Products were Invented

These products were developed in response to a problem that I had with my house.

The Retro-Fit Perimeter System

(patent pending)

Over time the gardens surrounding my weather board home have become higher and higher until they were within a few millimetres of the bottom of the boards. I could see that some of the boards were becoming rotten due to the continual moisture present.

The solution I devised was to dig a trench to remove the soil. To keep the soil away from the foundation I had pressed up an aluminium channel.  Version 1 of the retro fit perimeter drain was born.  The results were patently obvious. The foundation was dry and the zone below the boards was dry. The rot stopped!

This version is for retro fitting and does not require Council approval. It uses a self draining principle with drainage holes in the base so that any water that enters just drains out into the soil or out via the 80mm outlet to a sump or other drainage system

The logic here was simple.  If I did nothing all the water from the weatherboards fell to the ground and was absorbed by it.  In my situation there was no runoff.  Thus I theorised that all I had to do was allow the water to be absorbed into the soils by adding holes to the lower portion of the profile.

In practical terms however not all soils have the ability to absorb the water so I have added a drainage connection which can be connected to a sump or other piped drainage system thus keeping the water well away from the bottom of the boards.  The Perimeter System Product

Level-Entry Threshold System

(patent pending)

In order to solve the height difference between the door threshold and the bottom of the cladding a new product was required.

Key to this was reading the NZ Building code E2/AS1 which is External Moisture Acceptable Solutions.

The main requirements here were dimension based with the aim or removing water from the door zone to a drainage system. One of the requirements is that there must be a 12mm gap between the drain and the door sill hardware.

Considerable development ensued to comply with the legal requirements. The result is a cost effective system which is simple to install and looks good.

A team consisting of a designer, 2D/3D draughting consultant, and production engineers have refined the product to ensure ease of use and improved the aesthetic qualities.
